Soshanguve Development Team

Goggo Thandi Skosana approached us (as Like2Bike) about 8 years ago. Her aim was to get the kids off the streets by getting them involved in cycling. The agreement was to get the kids participating in our Like2Bike (the name back then) events, at no cost to them. We payed for their transport and food, orgainsed donation bicycles and gear and helped where we could to assist their riding journey. The kids loved the fun of the day. The children raced, were taught to be marshals, handed out water and medals and were an integral part of the events. After a few years, Suzuki got involved to assist in purchasing bicycles for the team and a trailer for transport, Uvex helmets and cycling kit so the children could feel like they were part of a team.

On presentation of the bicycles and gear, they enjoyed an outride and we completed the day with boerie rolls. It was very well received and the delight on the kids faces was priceless. Such an honour to be a part of such a special community project. The Suzuki sponsorship to Shoshanguve ended, but the kids continued to ride and compete and the bicycles got well used for races, going to school and general transport.

These little ones are phenomenal. They ride what they can, what we can fix, and what they are given. They never complain and always strive to do their best. The youngest is 4, a full spirited tiny human thatt just wants to ride, and the eldest is a para-athelete: Siyabonakaliso.

Siyabonakaliso (Kehla) is next level.... He has half and arm, and an iron will, and till the beginning of this year, never rode the same bike at any of the races. I decided to adjust my bicycle for him to use, so he has some sort of steady bicycle to race with. Always a smile, always positive and always wanting to do well, there are times he doesn’t race because he feels he needs to study for exams so he can do well at school. Very well balanced and focused. https://www.instagram.com/reel/C6tIZSxqA9K/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

There is another little athlete, we call him Bientjies, he is 13. His story brakes my heart and we, as a group do what we can to help him, and fellow riders because all they want to do, is race!

It's been an amazing journey with Goggo Thandi and her phenomenal riders. Goggo Thandi has put in countless hours getting the kids involved with cycling and keeping them off the streets. These children rely on donations and the kindness of others to be able to compete and race. We are so proud of their tenactiy, determination and hard work.

Some incredible success stories of some of the kids who were involved in the Development Cycling Programme over the years:

  • Two of they are at University of Cape
